If you have ever ordered kids clothes online in India and received something that was clearly the wrong size — despite ordering the "correct" age — you are not alone. Indian kidswear sizing is notoriously inconsistent. A "4 years" tee from one brand may be cut identically to a "6 years" from another. Labels use different conventions: some go by age, some by height, some use numeric sizes (2, 4, 6, 8) that don't obviously correspond to anything, and some use S/M/L/XL for children.
The result is that age-based sizing is essentially useless as a standalone guide. The only reliable approach is to measure your child's actual height, weight, and chest circumference — and then match against a chart that maps those measurements to sizes.
How to Measure Your Child (Takes 2 Minutes)
- Height: Stand the child straight against a wall without shoes. Mark where the top of their head meets the wall and measure from floor to mark in centimetres.
- Weight: Use a bathroom scale. Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the child; subtract the difference. Or use a baby/child scale if available.
- Chest: Wrap a soft measuring tape around the fullest part of the chest, under the armpits, keeping it level. Do not pull tight — keep it snug but comfortable. Record in centimetres.

Tip: When your child's measurements fall between two sizes, always go with the larger one. Children grow fast, and a slightly larger fit is comfortable; a slightly smaller fit becomes unusable within weeks.
Why Indian Kids Sizing Is So Inconsistent
India does not have a single mandatory national standard for children's apparel sizing. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has published guidelines (IS 4653 covers body measurements for garment sizing), but adoption across the fragmented garment industry — especially among smaller manufacturers — is inconsistent. Brands calibrate sizing to their own historical patterns, their target customer base, and sometimes to international size tables that do not reflect the typical build of Indian children.
The practical result is that you cannot trust the size label alone. A "6 years" from a budget manufacturer may run very small because they have cut their fabric cost. A premium brand may run large because they build in growth room. Regional manufacturers in Tirupur often follow their own conventions — which can differ even from what the same fabric is sold as in Coimbatore or Chennai.
Tips for Buying Kids Clothes Online in India
- Always measure first. Do not guess from age. A child who is tall for their age may need clothing two sizes above the age label.
